Andrew J. Epstein
"Self Portrait on Prozac"
Two-color block print, linoleum, 2000
Epstein writes: "Remembering the rodent king's endless litigation against the underground comic book Air Pirates and the animated classic, Bambi Meets Godzilla, I used a combination of Mickey Mouse and a lot of Ignatz from Krazy Kat. I was very concerned that I might be treading on a copyright issue, so I combined the rodents as creatures of my inner id. Crazy, animated and medicated seemed to say it all at the turn of the century."
No stranger to controversy, Epstein's first exhibit in New York was a three-man show with Robert Mapplethorpe and Tom of Finland. He currently has several works on display at Baltimore's American Visionary Art Museum.
